The University of Washington Continuum College’s new Assistant Vice Provost (AVP) for Digital Learning Innovation Bryan Blakeley says online learning could be life-changing for millions of Americans.

“Around 36 million Americans have attended college but received no credential as a result,” says Blakeley. “Online education is an important way to invite these learners back to our institutions and help them advance while keeping their work and family responsibilities.”

Blakeley is the first to hold this newly created position and comes to the UW after eight years at Boston College. He most recently was executive director of the Center for Digital Innovation in Learning, where he led the digital learning response to the pandemic and helped grow a university-wide culture of excellence and experimentation around digital learning.

“I am excited to join UW Continuum College and work with a group of people who are focused on inclusion and access to world-class learning opportunities.”

In his AVP role, Blakeley leads the Learning Experience and Learning Engineering teams of instructional designers, media developers and learning technologists.

“This new role is about much more than online courses,” says Rovy Branon, vice provost of Continuum College. “Bryan is going to build on the great work already underway in the digital learning space at UW Continuum College and help us to innovate and better meet the needs of our learners.”

Knowing that education has the power to promote positive change, advance social equity and improve people’s lives, Blakeley says he is focusing on how digital learning tools can enhance the learning experience. “The challenge for my team and me is: How do we co-design a variety of exceptional learning experiences to serve all of our students?”
