Building Futures Through Community and Innovation

Rovy Branon

The world is changing rapidly and advancing education to meet the needs of today is more vital than ever. At UW Continuum College, we view this moment not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity to strengthen our connection with people in the community.

As we move forward, the ways people learn will evolve — and that’s a good thing. It means creating new pathways, embracing flexible formats, and expanding access to programs that meet people where they are. To make this vision a reality, we’re building strategic partnerships and implementing new approaches.

This year, we launched the Vice Provost’s Council of Advisors, a group of community and business leaders whose insights and connections are helping us expand our philanthropic network and forge deeper strategic collaborations. Their contributions are already making an impact, enabling us to deliver programming in new ways to new parts of our community.

A prime example is our pilot with Vine Maple Place, which supports education-to-employment pathways for single-parent families experiencing housing instability. This initiative pairs UW Professional and Continuing Education programs with VMP’s wraparound services. Learners receive coaching and academic support from us, while VMP addresses their basic needs and promotes family stability, enabling participants to focus on their education and employment.

Beyond these kinds of partnerships, innovation continues to shape how we teach. We’re leading the university in accessibility, ensuring that all students can engage with our material and succeed. In addition, we’re exploring short, skill-based courses on Coursera, ideal for professionals seeking a quick refresher or a fast track into a new field.

Artificial intelligence also presents exciting possibilities. It’s poised to enhance operations and personalize education — from student services to course formats —offering new ways to reach people who’ve never had access to a place like UW.

As we advance our mission, it’s important to recognize that higher education is navigating profound uncertainty. Yet, there are many reasons for hope. There’s growing recognition that not everyone follows the same path or timeline for learning, and that we need diverse ways for people to access education that helps them stay relevant, resilient and fulfilled.

When we embrace the idea of supporting learners throughout their lives and opening doors for those who once believed education was beyond their reach — that’s real progress. And this year, we’re seeing more momentum toward that vision.

In addition to increasing external partnerships, we’re integrating our work more deeply across the tri-campus system. We’re expanding online and digital learning, strengthening workforce development, advancing lifelong learning and ensuring academic readiness for learners of all ages.

Our mission extends beyond serving our students and campus. We are a dynamic platform that grows with and within this remarkable research university and the communities we’re proud to support. In a time when education is more vital than ever, Continuum stands ready to evolve, expand and empower.
